Muffled Hearing
Causes of Muffled Hearing
Do you have the unpleasant sensation of something in your ear that prevents clear hearing, with sounds and voices perceived as muffled? It could be muffled hearing, a rather common disorder that may stem from trivial mechanical causes, such as a foreign object in the ear, like water or earwax buildup, or it could have various pathological causes. Muffled hearing may also indicate a phenomenon of presbycusis, age-related hearing loss, which occurs with the deterioration of the hair cells in the cochlea.
Indeed, presbycusis is a particularly frequent hearing impairment in the elderly, affecting around 40-50% of adults over 75 years old.
Remedies for Muffled Hearing
In most cases, muffled hearing resolves spontaneously within a few hours without the need for specific interventions. However, if compromised hearing persists, it is advisable to undergo a check-up to rule out the presence of possible pathologies or the onset of presbycusis.
